Midnight TurningI imagine this music being heard at midnight, at the closing of a long ritual performance by an assembly of instrumentalists who have now mostly departed. These players are the last to remain in the space as a new stage of the night is transitioned in. In order to stay up until dawn the audience/participants must dance. The DJ weaves in the thread of rhythm that will be maintained for the next few hours. There should be no “ending” to this piece in its ideal presentation, as it is open-ended in its continuation via the DJ. The beat goes on. This piece represents a personal experiment in going further towards the music that I want to hear; to unite my ideas as a “classical” composer with my more recent interest in the aesthetics of hip hop turntablism. - E.S.
