Remix/Origin (2001)

I consider this piece to be an orchestral sandbox, a collage of primary ideas from my sketchbooks to be somewhat reconfigured for each performance opportunity. It is a meeting point for related artifacts from my personal history, linking several of my earliest orchestral ideas (as a student at Oberlin) with new material. One or two sections have appeared in other works (both preceding and following the composition of Remix/Origin, 2001 version), but used to very different effect due to the changed context and orchestration. Which is the source and which is the remix?

On the issue of form, I am primarily guided by intuition in how to balance these fragments of past and present. Transitions are few. Formal signposts occur in the form of recurring condensations to single-note textures, followed by expansions from that note. The articulation and flavor of each occurence of this phenomenon is uniquely characterized, a refrain which changes its face with each appearance.
